Warriorz is a dance school six days a week. On the seventh it is a wedding rehearsal, a sixth birthday, a casting session or somebody else's Tuesday-night class. All of it is open to anybody — you do not have to be a member, or a dancer, or under sixteen.
Weddings & first dance
Four hours with a choreographer costs £175, and it turns the part you have been quietly dreading into the part people film.
Nobody remembers the napkins. They remember the first dance, because it is the one moment of the day when the two of you are alone in the middle of a room and every person you have ever met is allowed to stare.
Most couples come to us six to eight weeks out, having left it just late enough to start worrying properly. That is usually plenty. We choreograph to your song — the actual recording, not an approximation — and we teach it in the shoes you are going to wear, because the shoes are what catch people out.
Ballroom and Latin if you want the classic. Street if you would rather the room laughed. A flash mob if the groomsmen have been rehearsing in a car park behind your back, which happens more often than you would think.
You do not need to be able to dance. Almost nobody who books this can. That is the entire reason for paying somebody to teach you.
Studio hire
Most halls you can hire around here were built for something else. You spend the first twenty minutes stacking chairs.
This one is a dance studio on Sish Lane in Stevenage, and it is empty when you arrive. There is a main studio floor, a waiting area for the people who came with whoever is dancing, a toilet, and enough tables and chairs that you do not have to bring your own.
Teachers hire it weekly. So do fitness instructors, drama groups, rehearsal calls and the occasional casting. If you want the same slot every week, say so — regular bookings are discounted, and having it in the diary is worth more than the few pounds it saves.
Dancers for events
Warriorz dancers perform at weddings, corporate events, launches and parties, choreographed by Zara Richards.
Between them the academy's teachers have worked the BRIT Awards, the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony, Glastonbury and Paris Fashion Week. It is the same people. When you book Warriorz for an event, you are booking the room that trains them, not an agency's shortlist.
